    Job offer scam aka fakecheque scam

    “I just did an online interview for a position with Cancure. Their headquarters is in Australia supposedly and they do cancer research. Their website seems legit. The interview seemed legit. All seemed normal until I was offered the job thirty minutes later.

    The lady confirmed my contact info and says the company is mailing me a laptop and a badge. Don’t know why I need a badge for a remote position……then she says the company is sending a check for me to deposit into my bank account so I can purchase the rest of my office supplies at a nearby Staples or Best Buy.

    So at this point I’m like….yes. Probably a scam. What do I do now?”

    In a fake check scam, a person you don’t know asks you to deposit a check— sometimes for several thousand dollars, and usually for more than you are owed — and send some of the money to another person.

    These scams work because fake checks generally look just like real checks, even to bank employees. They are often printed with the names and addresses of legitimate financial institutions. They may even be real checks written on bank accounts that belong to identity theft victims. It can take weeks for a bank to figure out that the check is fake.

    Fake checks can take weeks to be discovered and untangled. By that time, the scammer has any money you sent, and you’re stuck paying the money back to the bank.
